Starting next year, all primary one pupils in Scotland will receive free school bags in various colours that can be personalised. This initiative aims to alleviate confusion among children who might have identical bags while also allowing them to express their creativity through designs displayed in designated window slots.
The backpacks will be crafted from recycled materials and come equipped with essential items like stationery, a water bottle, and books. This move is part of a broader strategy by the Scottish government to reduce educational costs for families and ensure children have a strong start in their schooling.
Education Secretary Màiri McAllan highlighted that the design and colour options will be shaped by discussions with children, families, and educators. The initiative is reminiscent of the successful baby box programme introduced in 2017, which aims to provide essential items for newborns.
Approximately 47,000 children are expected to benefit from these bags, reinforcing the Scottish government’s commitment to equal opportunities in education. Families can opt out of receiving the bags, but the intention is to ensure every child begins school on an equal footing.
