Rising Syphilis Rates Prompt Urgent Testing Call in Wales

Health officials in Swansea Bay are sounding the alarm over rising syphilis rates, urging sexually active individuals to get tested. The Swansea Bay University Health Board reports higher levels of syphilis than many other areas in Wales, with cases spanning ages 17 to over 70. This increase is concerning as many infected individuals show no symptoms, allowing the infection to spread unknowingly.

Advanced Nurse Practitioner Carly Porter emphasises the importance of early testing, stating that prompt diagnosis leads to effective treatment. The health board is providing free and confidential testing to help curb transmission rates. Education about syphilis, including its transmission through oral sex, is crucial in destigmatising the infection and promoting safe sexual practices.

The rise in syphilis cases across Wales mirrors a national trend, with diagnoses reaching their highest levels since 1948. Public health practitioners are particularly concerned about pregnant women, as syphilis can be transmitted from mother to baby, leading to serious complications. Screening for pregnant women is essential to prevent congenital syphilis and its associated risks.

As the conversation around syphilis continues, health officials encourage everyone to prioritise testing, even in the absence of symptoms. Negative test results can serve as a benchmark for future screenings, helping to identify any new infections early on. The push for awareness and education aims to foster safer sexual health practices across the community.
