New 10p Coins Featuring King Charles Enter Circulation

Today marks a significant change in British currency as 7 million new 10p coins featuring King Charles’s portrait are released into circulation. This is the first time the 10p coin will bear the King’s image, replacing the previous design featuring Queen Elizabeth II. The Royal Mint has stated that these coins are being introduced due to increased demand for the 10p denomination, which is often used in everyday transactions.

The new coins will also showcase the capercaillie bird on the reverse side, a nod to King Charles’s commitment to conservation. This design choice aims to raise awareness about the species, which is at risk of disappearing from the UK. The introduction of these coins is not just a change in design; it reflects a broader cultural shift as the nation adapts to a new monarch.

While the new coins will be available at post offices and banks, the existing 10p coins featuring the Queen will remain legal tender. This dual circulation is intended to ensure a smooth transition and minimise environmental impact, as the Royal Mint aims to avoid waste associated with phasing out old currency.

Collectors may find these coins particularly appealing, as they represent only 1% of the 24.14 billion coins currently in circulation. With the Royal Mint highlighting their potential rarity, these coins could become highly sought after, sparking interest among numismatists and everyday users alike.
