Surge in Energy Complaints Signals Financial Strain for Households

As energy costs continue to rise, British consumers are increasingly voicing their frustrations, with complaints to the Energy Ombudsman jumping by 16% in the first half of 2026. This surge, driven largely by billing disputes, highlights the mounting pressure on household budgets as the cost of living crisis deepens.

In total, over 46,000 complaints were recorded, with billing issues making up 58% of these cases. This trend is particularly concerning as Ofgem is set to announce a 4% increase in the energy price cap, coinciding with the onset of colder weather when heating demands spike.

The timing of these complaints is critical; households are bracing for higher bills just as they prepare for winter. The increase in disputes also reflects broader issues with energy suppliers, as many consumers struggle to navigate billing complexities and smart meter problems.

Despite a slight decrease in customer service complaints, the overall rise in energy-related grievances underscores the urgent need for effective consumer protections. The government’s recent moves to empower the ombudsman and streamline complaint processes may provide some relief, but the immediate financial impact on households remains a pressing concern.
