Tragic Death Rates Among Young Care Leavers Prompt Government Action

A recent report highlights a staggering death rate among young adults who have left care, revealing they are four times more likely to die than their peers. This alarming statistic has been branded a ‘national tragedy’ by those advocating for change, as many of these individuals face significant challenges upon reaching adulthood. The report emphasizes the so-called ‘care cliff,’ where support drastically diminishes at age 18, leaving many isolated and vulnerable.

In response, the Government has announced a £25 million funding boost for the Staying Close programme, aimed at providing ongoing support for care leavers up to the age of 25. This initiative seeks to ensure that young people do not transition into adulthood without a safety net, offering them a trusted adult to guide them through critical life changes, including accessing healthcare and employment.

The review underscores the importance of stable relationships in preventing loneliness and despair among care leavers. It calls for tailored support to address the unique needs of these young individuals, particularly those who have experienced trauma or instability in their lives. The report also highlights the need for local authorities to publish clear plans on how they will assist care leavers in their transition to independent living.

As the Government prepares to implement new duties for local authorities, the hope is that these measures will significantly reduce the risks faced by young care leavers. Advocates stress that the state must do more to fill the gaps left by traditional family structures, ensuring that no young person is left to navigate adulthood alone.
