Local Park Disrupted by Travellers’ Arrival in Norfolk

A group of travellers has caused significant disruption in Wymondham, Norfolk, after gaining access to Westwood Gardens by destroying wooden fencing. This incursion has left local residents unable to use the park, leading to heightened tensions within the community.

Residents quickly alerted both the police and their local councillor, Jonathon Purle, resulting in a police presence at the scene. However, the travellers subsequently moved to Browick Road Park, where they removed a lock to gain entry, further complicating the situation for locals seeking to enjoy the recreational space.

Councillor Purle is advocating for stronger security measures, urging South Norfolk Council to replace the destroyed fencing with more robust barriers. He has expressed concern for the elderly residents affected by the encampment and is committed to ensuring the travellers are relocated promptly.

This incident highlights the growing issue of unauthorised traveller sites in England, which have surged by 73% since early 2020. Changes in planning rules may complicate efforts to manage these situations, making it crucial for local authorities to respond effectively to community concerns.
