New 10p Coin Highlights Conservation Efforts

A new 10p coin featuring King Charles III and the endangered capercaillie has entered circulation in the UK. This release marks the first new 10p coins minted in four years, with 600,000 dated 2023 and 6.5 million dated 2026 now available. The capercaillie, a bird native to Scotland, is on the UK’s conservation red list, emphasizing the urgent need for awareness about species at risk of extinction.

The Royal Mint aims to spark conversations about wildlife conservation through this coin, which is part of a broader initiative to feature the country’s flora and fauna on currency. The design, created by artist Mike Langman, serves as a reminder of the capercaillie’s dwindling population, which has declined significantly in recent years.

While old coins featuring Queen Elizabeth II remain in circulation, the new coins represent only about 1% of the total coins in circulation, making them particularly appealing to collectors. This limited release could lead to increased interest in coin collecting and discussions about environmental issues among the public.

In a related move, the Bank of England plans to introduce wildlife imagery on banknotes, replacing historical figures with animals like puffins and bumblebees. This shift reflects a growing trend towards integrating conservation themes into everyday currency, potentially influencing public attitudes towards wildlife protection.
