Concerns Rise Over New Social Housing Policy Impacting Domestic Abuse Survivors

A domestic abuse charity has raised alarms over proposed changes to social housing policy by Reform UK, which aims to prioritise married couples. Critics argue this could inadvertently trap women in abusive relationships, fearing they may lose housing support if they leave. The policy, which gives preference to employed British-born individuals under 35, is seen as potentially harmful to vulnerable groups, particularly single parents and those experiencing various forms of domestic abuse.

Ellie Daniel from Women’s Aid warns that this shift could discourage women from seeking safety, as they might feel pressured to remain with their abuser to secure a roof over their heads. Current laws classify anyone facing domestic abuse as legally homeless, granting them priority for housing. However, the new proposals could complicate this support, particularly for those in non-physical abusive situations.

The charity emphasises that all survivors, regardless of marital status, should have equal access to social housing. They fear that the focus on marriage as a criterion could lead to increased risks for women and children, as it may limit their options to escape dangerous environments.

Reform UK asserts that victims of domestic violence will still be prioritised, but critics question the adequacy of protections for those facing less visible forms of abuse. The implications of this policy could extend beyond housing, affecting the safety and well-being of many families across the UK.
