Significant Drop in Asylum Seekers Housed in Hotels

The number of asylum seekers in temporary hotel accommodation in the UK has plummeted by 50% year-on-year, reaching 16,021 by June 2026. This decline marks the lowest figure since records began in 2022, down from a peak of 56,018 in September 2023. The reduction reflects broader changes in government policy and spending on asylum, which has also decreased by 8% to £4.36 billion in 2025-26.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood attributes this trend to the government’s efforts to regain control over the migration system. The Labour Government aims to eliminate the use of hotels for asylum seekers by the end of its parliamentary term, with a shift towards more basic accommodations like former military barracks.

This shift not only impacts the living conditions of asylum seekers but also signals a significant change in the government’s approach to immigration and border control. The closure of 13 hotels earlier this month is part of a broader strategy to manage asylum costs and improve the system’s efficiency.

As the government continues to enforce stricter measures against illegal migration, including increased deportations and enforcement on French beaches, the implications for future asylum policies and the treatment of migrants in the UK are becoming increasingly evident. This evolving landscape may affect public perception and the political discourse surrounding immigration in the coming years.
