The Challenge of Regulating Social Media’s Impact on Youth

Social media platforms like Meta are under increasing scrutiny for their role in fostering addictive behaviours among young users. Lawsuits are emerging, particularly in the US, alleging that these platforms are engineered to keep users engaged, leading to severe psychological issues such as anxiety and depression. This has prompted a global conversation about the need for stricter regulations to protect children from the harms associated with excessive social media use.

As governments grapple with the rapid evolution of technology, the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) is gaining bipartisan support in the US. This legislation aims to impose stronger safety measures for minors, including usage limits and parental controls. However, the challenge remains in enforcing these regulations effectively, given the fast-paced nature of technological advancements and the significant profits generated by these platforms.

Moreover, the potential shift towards subscription models for social media could change the landscape of user engagement. Research indicates that many users are open to paying for ad-free experiences with stronger safety measures. Yet, it remains uncertain whether these alternatives can replace the dominant, engagement-driven models currently in place.

The intertwining of social media and artificial intelligence poses another layer of complexity. As these platforms invest heavily in AI, concerns arise about the implications for user behaviour and mental health. Experts warn that the same flawed practices that have characterised social media could be replicated in AI products, making regulation even more critical as these technologies evolve.
