Youth Unemployment: A Mixed Picture as NEET Numbers Decline

Recent figures show a decrease in the number of young people aged 16 to 24 who are not in education, employment, or training (NEET), dropping by 30,000 to approximately 981,000. While this decline is a positive sign, it still leaves the total 30,000 higher than the previous year, highlighting ongoing challenges in youth employment.

The rise in NEET figures earlier this year, surpassing one million for the first time in over a decade, has raised alarms about the long-term implications for young people’s futures. Experts warn that many face complex barriers that hinder their ability to secure jobs or training, which can lead to lasting negative effects on their wellbeing and earning potential.

Charity leaders emphasize that the systems designed to support young people often fall short, with inadequate access to opportunities and support services. The economic landscape continues to create obstacles, particularly for those from disadvantaged backgrounds, exacerbating the risk of long-term unemployment.

As the government prepares for a review on youth unemployment, there is hope that it will address these systemic issues and provide a clearer pathway for young people to re-enter education or the workforce. The urgency of the situation cannot be overstated, as many young lives remain on hold, waiting for the chance to learn and earn.
