Record Ketamine Seizures Highlight Growing Drug Threat in the UK

The UK Border Force has reported a staggering 1.3 tonnes of ketamine seized in just the first three months of 2026, marking a fifteen-year high. This surge in interceptions reflects a worrying trend in drug misuse, particularly among younger populations, raising alarms about public health and safety.

The recent figures show a 42% increase from the previous quarter, indicating a significant escalation in the trafficking of this dangerous substance. Ketamine, known for its severe health risks, can cause lasting damage to the bladder and urinary tract, with potential fatal outcomes.

In addition to ketamine, Border Force also intercepted 59,000 doses of nitrous oxide and over 9,000kg of cocaine during the same period. This uptick in drug seizures is part of a broader strategy involving international cooperation to combat the influx of synthetic opioids, which have been linked to over 1,000 deaths in the UK.

Officials stress that each seizure not only disrupts organized crime but also protects communities from the devastating effects of addiction. The government remains committed to tackling this growing threat, as the rise in drug trafficking poses serious implications for public health and safety across the nation.
