‘Winter panic’: EU gas stores at their lowest level in 13 years

As Europe enters winter with gas stores at their lowest in 13 years, the UK is particularly vulnerable to price volatility. With EU gas stocks only 63% full, significantly below the 80% average, concerns are mounting about the potential for increased energy costs this winter.

The UK, one of Europe’s largest gas consumers, has minimal domestic storage capacity and relies heavily on imports. This dependency could lead to heightened competition for gas supplies, especially as traders anticipate bidding wars with Asian markets for liquefied natural gas.

Analysts warn that without a significant increase in gas imports, prices could soar above €100 per megawatt-hour, exacerbating the financial strain on households and businesses already facing rising energy bills. The UK government is exploring financial support options to bolster domestic gas infrastructure, as declining North Sea production adds to the urgency.

As the winter months approach, the interplay of low storage levels and rising demand could disrupt energy markets, making it crucial for consumers to prepare for potential price hikes and supply challenges ahead.
