Serbia’s Balancing Act: Navigating EU and Russian Relations Ahead of Elections

As Serbia approaches a pivotal election, President Aleksandar Vucic is caught in a geopolitical tug-of-war between the European Union and Russia. His recent decision to request Russian firefighting assistance during devastating wildfires has raised eyebrows, particularly as it came before activating EU support. This move is seen as a strategic attempt to maintain a delicate balance, showcasing Serbia’s ties to both Moscow and Brussels.

Vucic’s engagement with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy further complicates matters. While it signals a nod to Western interests, it must not be perceived as a shift away from Russia. Political analysts suggest that Vucic is trying to present himself as a friend to both sides, aiming to avoid alienating either the EU or Russia during the election campaign.

However, the growing tensions between Russia and the West are narrowing Serbia’s room for manoeuvre. The EU increasingly expects candidate countries to align with its foreign policies, and Serbia’s refusal to impose sanctions on Russia remains a significant hurdle. This situation places Vucic in a precarious position as he seeks to maintain his political standing while navigating these external pressures.

Ultimately, the outcome of the upcoming election will determine whether Vucic can continue to juggle these complex relationships. The stakes are high, not just for his political future but also for Serbia’s geopolitical alignment in a rapidly changing landscape.
