Young Workers’ Sick Days: A Generational Divide

Polling data reveals that younger workers, particularly those under 25, are nearly twice as likely to take sick days when not genuinely unwell compared to their older counterparts. This trend raises questions about workplace culture and the differing attitudes towards work-life balance across generations.

Four in five workers under 25 admitted to taking at least one ‘sickie’ in the past year, with many citing reasons such as fatigue or social commitments. In contrast, only one in ten workers aged 55 to 64 reported similar behaviour, highlighting a significant generational gap in work ethics and expectations.

The implications of this divide are profound, especially as the UK grapples with an ageing workforce and rising economic inactivity among older workers. The Centre for Social Justice suggests that retaining older employees, who are less likely to take unnecessary time off, is crucial for economic growth.

As younger workers increasingly prioritise mental health and personal well-being, employers may need to adapt their policies to balance these needs with productivity. Understanding these trends could help shape future workplace strategies and support systems, ensuring a more cohesive and effective workforce.
