El Obeid Faces Dire Humanitarian Conditions Amid Sudan’s Ongoing Conflict

As the civil war in Sudan continues, the humanitarian crisis in El Obeid is escalating dramatically. Over 15,000 families have fled to the city since mid-July, joining more than 200,000 already displaced this year. The influx has led to severe overcrowding in the city and surrounding camps, where basic necessities are alarmingly scarce.

The situation is compounded by soaring food prices, with staples like groundnut oil and flour more than doubling in cost. This is largely due to the conflict disrupting supply routes, making it increasingly difficult for humanitarian aid to reach those in need. The UN warns that parts of the region are at risk of famine as conditions worsen.

In addition to food shortages, the infrastructure in El Obeid is in disrepair, with water supplies severely impacted by recent drone strikes. Residents and displaced individuals are relying on inadequate water trucking systems, leading to unsanitary conditions in camps where latrine access is critically low.

The ongoing violence, including drone strikes targeting civilians, continues to destabilize the area. With more civilians arriving daily, the situation is becoming increasingly desperate, highlighting the urgent need for international attention and aid to prevent further deterioration of living conditions in El Obeid.
