The European Union has imposed stricter regulations on popular platforms like ChatGPT, Reddit, and Roblox, now that they have surpassed 45 million average monthly users. This change is part of the Digital Services Act (DSA), which aims to enhance user safety and data protection across the bloc.
As a result, these platforms are now required to assess and mitigate risks associated with illegal content, the protection of minors, and users’ mental health. This marks a significant shift in how tech giants must operate within the EU, reflecting growing concerns over online safety and content moderation.
ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, becomes the first AI chatbot to fall under the DSA’s jurisdiction, highlighting the EU’s commitment to regulating emerging technologies. Meanwhile, Roblox and Reddit are classified as Very Large Online Platforms (VLOPs), which subjects them to even more stringent oversight.
