Challenges Ahead for Ukraine’s Sanctions Strategy in the US

Ukraine’s sanctions commissioner, Vladyslav Vlasiuk, is in Washington to advocate for a significant sanctions bill aimed at Russia. While the bill passed the Senate with strong bipartisan support, it faces hurdles in the House due to concerns over provisions that could grant President Trump excessive tariff powers. This legislation is crucial for Ukraine, as it seeks to limit Russia’s ability to finance its war through energy exports.

The proposed tariffs could reach up to 100% on countries purchasing Russian oil and gas, which may impact major buyers like China and India. If passed, this bill could alter the dynamics of international energy trade and exert pressure on nations that continue to support Russia economically. However, the uncertainty around the bill’s future in the House could delay these potential changes.

Vlasiuk’s visit underscores Ukraine’s ongoing efforts to keep Western lawmakers focused on the economic underpinnings of Russia’s military campaign. By targeting the financial networks that support Russia, Ukraine aims to disrupt Moscow’s war efforts more effectively than through individual sanctions alone.

As discussions unfold in Congress, the outcome of this legislation could have lasting implications for the geopolitical landscape, influencing not only US-Russia relations but also global energy markets and the future of international sanctions policy.
