Thailand Reduces Visa-Free Stays for EU Tourists

Thailand has confirmed it will cut visa-free stays for EU travellers from 60 days to just 30 days starting September 15. This decision, influenced by rising crime rates involving foreign nationals, aims to enhance security while still supporting the vital tourism sector, which contributes over 10% to the country’s GDP.

The reduction in stay duration could significantly impact travel plans for many European tourists, who often rely on the extended time to explore the country. Although there is an option to extend stays once at the discretion of immigration officers, the new rules may deter some potential visitors, especially those planning longer trips.

Interestingly, while EU nationals face stricter limits, travellers from countries like Peru, Brazil, and South Korea will see their visa-free stays increased to 90 days. This disparity raises questions about Thailand’s tourism strategy and its focus on attracting specific nationalities.

For those looking to stay longer, the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) offers a solution, allowing stays of up to 180 days, but with strict financial requirements. As tourism numbers remain below pre-pandemic levels, these changes reflect Thailand’s balancing act between security and economic reliance on foreign visitors.
