Teachers’ Unions Prepare for Strike Action Over Workload Issues

Teachers in Northern Ireland are gearing up for potential strike action after unions voted overwhelmingly in favour of industrial action due to escalating workload concerns. The five main teaching unions have expressed frustration over the Department of Education’s failure to implement recommendations aimed at alleviating these pressures, which were outlined in an independent review back in November 2025.

The NASUWT reported that a staggering 92% of its members supported strike action, highlighting a deep-seated exhaustion among teachers. Union leaders are urging the Education Minister to take immediate steps to address these issues, warning that without significant changes, robust industrial action is inevitable.

The National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT) also secured a strong mandate for action, with 81% of members in favour of striking. This reflects widespread concern not only about workload but also about funding pressures that threaten the sustainability of school leadership.

As unions prepare for possible strikes, the implications for students and parents could be significant, potentially disrupting education and highlighting the urgent need for reforms in how teachers are supported in their roles.
