Illicit Tobacco Trade Threatens Local Businesses in Scotland

The rise of shops selling illicit tobacco and vapes is posing a significant threat to legitimate businesses across Scotland. Grocery store owner Mohammed Rajak highlights how customers now openly ask for cheap tobacco, undermining his 35 years of hard work. This shift in behaviour indicates a growing acceptance of illicit products, which are often sold without regard for safety regulations.

These illicit products not only evade tax duties but also support organised crime, as evidenced by recent raids in areas previously thought to be unaffected. The presence of unregulated tobacco can lead to serious health risks, with tests revealing harmful substances in these products. Public health experts warn that this undermines efforts to protect community health and safety.

Despite efforts from Trading Standards, enforcement varies widely across Scotland, with some areas seeing minimal action against offenders. The lack of regulatory power compared to England and Wales hampers their ability to effectively combat this issue. As illicit tobacco becomes more prevalent, the call for stronger measures is growing louder.

The Scottish government acknowledges the seriousness of the situation and is exploring ways to enhance enforcement. The implications of this trade extend beyond lost revenue; they threaten public health and the viability of legitimate businesses, highlighting a pressing need for action.
