Calls for Stronger Domestic Abuse Protections After Tragic Murder

The family of Stacy Hunter, who was murdered by her estranged husband while he was on bail for previous attacks, is urging the Scottish government to take stronger action against domestic abuse. Despite the proposed misogyny bill aimed at recognising misogyny as a distinct form of prejudice, her family believes it won’t prevent future tragedies like Stacy’s. They argue that the focus should be on harsher consequences for repeat offenders rather than solely addressing societal attitudes.

Stacy’s brother, Sean Hunter, expressed frustration that current proposals do not adequately protect victims, highlighting the need for GPS monitoring of high-risk offenders. This technology could help ensure that abusers are kept away from their victims, particularly those released on bail. The family is advocating for immediate measures to safeguard individuals currently at risk, rather than waiting for legislative changes that may take time to implement.

Justice Secretary Neil Gray acknowledged the importance of tackling violence against women and girls, stating that strengthening bail conditions and expanding GPS technology are priorities. However, critics argue that the slow rollout of such measures has left many victims vulnerable. The Hunters are calling for a more proactive approach to ensure that victims are not let down by the system, especially when their abusers are granted bail.

As discussions continue around the proposed misogyny bill, the family remains focused on immediate safety concerns. They want to see real change that prioritises the protection of victims over the rights of offenders, emphasising that without significant action, more lives could be at risk.
