Tragic Shoreham Incident: Inquest Reveals Family’s Final Moments

An inquest has opened into the tragic deaths of a family who drowned off the coast of Shoreham. Hussam El-Khawas, his wife Zeina Alayan, and their daughters Sara and Saja faced difficulties in the sea on August 18. While the parents and Sara were pronounced dead shortly after being rescued, six-year-old Saja succumbed to her injuries days later, highlighting the devastating impact on the family and community.

The inquest, led by Senior Coroner Penelope Scholfield, has been adjourned until March 2027, pending the outcome of a Sussex Police investigation. Initial findings indicate no third-party involvement, but the circumstances surrounding their outing raise questions about safety measures at popular beaches. The family, originally from Lebanon, had travelled from London to Shoreham for a day out, illustrating the risks that can accompany seemingly routine activities.

The tragedy has sparked a significant community response, with £23,000 raised to repatriate the bodies to Lebanon, allowing relatives to pay their final respects. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities families face during leisure activities, particularly in coastal areas where conditions can change rapidly.

As the inquest continues, it may prompt discussions on beach safety protocols and the need for better awareness of potential dangers in the water. The emotional toll on the community and the family’s friends underscores the far-reaching consequences of this heartbreaking event.
