Final Chance for LGBT Veterans to Claim Compensation for Historic Persecution

LGBT veterans who faced persecution under the UK’s military ‘gay ban’ have just 100 days left to claim compensation of up to £70,000. This final call comes as Defence Secretary Wes Streeting urges affected former service personnel to come forward before the scheme closes on December 12. The ban, which lasted from 1967 to 2000, led to harassment, investigations, and dismissals based solely on sexual orientation, leaving lasting scars on many individuals.

Since the introduction of the compensation scheme, nearly £60 million has been distributed to over 1,800 veterans. Those dismissed can receive £50,000, while others affected by harassment or investigations may claim an additional £20,000. The scheme aims to address the historical injustices faced by these individuals and restore their dignity.

Many veterans, like Jean, have shared their stories of trauma and loss of identity due to the ban. Jean’s experience in the Women’s Royal Army Corps highlights the emotional toll of being investigated for her sexual orientation while serving. She encourages others to seek support and apply for compensation, emphasizing that they are not alone in this journey.

The government and veterans charities are working to raise awareness, particularly in regions where applications have been low. Equalities Minister Simon Lightwood has called this ban a ‘shameful chapter’ in history, stressing the importance of recognition and justice for those affected. With the deadline approaching, it is crucial for eligible veterans to act quickly to secure their rightful compensation.
