Concerns Over Housing Development Near SAS Base

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has raised alarms about a proposed housing estate in Herefordshire, which could jeopardise the security of the nearby SAS base. The plan includes up to 250 homes, with a significant portion designated as affordable housing, situated on a 26-acre field opposite Stirling Lines. The MoD argues that this development would lead to a ‘significant cumulative increase’ in residential properties adjacent to a site deemed crucial for national defence.

In a letter to local planners, the MoD expressed the need for oversight before the final layout of the housing scheme is approved. They highlighted potential traffic issues on the A480 Jellicoe Way, already a congested route, which could pose risks for service personnel and their families. The MoD’s concerns extend to the possibility of future residents lodging complaints about noise from military operations, which could pressure the MoD to alter activities at the base.

Additionally, the MoD urged planners to ensure that the development does not exacerbate existing flooding issues from the A-road into the garrison. With over 100 objections already submitted, the Herefordshire Council is set to make a decision on the proposal by 22 October, making this a critical moment for both local residents and national security.

As the debate unfolds, the implications of this housing project extend beyond local concerns, potentially affecting military operations and community dynamics in the area. The MoD’s insistence on having a say in the development highlights the delicate balance between housing needs and national security interests.
