Gloria Steinem, a pivotal figure in the feminist movement, has died at the age of 92. Her activism spanned decades, influencing generations of women and shaping discussions around gender equality. Steinem’s work not only highlighted women’s rights but also addressed broader social injustices, making her a symbol of resilience and change.
Born in 1935, Steinem’s early life experiences, including caring for her mother with mental health issues, informed her views on marriage and women’s autonomy. Her groundbreaking journalism, including the infamous ‘A Bunny’s Tale,’ exposed the sexism within the Playboy brand, showcasing her commitment to revealing uncomfortable truths.
Steinem’s activism gained momentum after her personal experience with an illegal abortion, which propelled her into the forefront of the women’s liberation movement. Her participation in events like the abortion speak-out in New York marked a turning point, as she used her platform to advocate for reproductive rights and equality.
As we reflect on her passing, it’s essential to recognise the ongoing relevance of her work. Steinem’s legacy continues to inspire new generations to challenge societal norms and fight for equality, reminding us that the struggle for women’s rights is far from over.
