The Royal Mint has unveiled two new 50p coins to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Star Trek, a franchise that has significantly influenced science fiction and popular culture. One coin features the iconic Vulcan hand salute alongside the phrase “Live long and prosper,” while the other showcases four spacecraft from various eras of the series.

These coins not only celebrate a beloved franchise but also reflect the evolution of television technology, as they are inspired by the advancements in colour TV that emerged in the 1960s. The Mint’s head of fandom, Tim Mulhall, noted that these coins are designed for dedicated fans seeking a tangible piece of Star Trek history.

Star Trek first aired in 1966 and has since expanded into numerous series, films, and merchandise, creating a vast collector community. The release of these coins taps into this nostalgia, potentially driving interest in both collecting and the franchise itself.

As the Royal Mint continues to produce themed coins, this release highlights the intersection of pop culture and currency, offering fans a unique way to celebrate their passion while also investing in collectibles that may appreciate over time.
