Gaelic Media Services Face Funding Challenges

MG Alba, the Gaelic media services provider, is struggling with funding disparities compared to Welsh and Irish counterparts. John Morrison, chairman of MG Alba, highlighted that while Welsh and Irish services receive millions in public funding, Gaelic services are left wanting. This lack of financial support hampers efforts to diversify and adapt to digital platforms, which are crucial for reaching younger audiences.

Morrison pointed out that MG Alba’s funding from the Scottish government is significantly lower than that of similar organisations in Wales and Ireland. For instance, while MG Alba receives £15 million from the Scottish government, S4C in Wales benefits from £95 million in licence fee funding. This discrepancy raises concerns about the future of Gaelic broadcasting and its role in preserving the language.

The Scottish government has acknowledged the issue, stating that MG Alba does not receive fair funding from the TV licence fee, unlike its Welsh counterpart. Gaelic Secretary Màiri McAllan emphasised the BBC’s responsibility to reflect Scotland’s diverse culture, including Gaelic language programming.

As the UK government reviews the BBC Charter ahead of its renewal in 2028, the future of Gaelic media services hangs in the balance. Without increased funding, the growth of the Gaelic language and its cultural significance may be at risk, impacting communities that rely on these services for cultural expression and identity.
