Russia’s Growing Appeal to African Students

Russia is increasingly attracting African students as part of its strategy to strengthen ties with the continent and counter Western influence. In 2025, the country allocated over 5,000 state-funded university spots for African students, a significant increase from previous years. This surge in applications, particularly from nations like Sudan and Ghana, reflects a broader trend where affordability and political relations play crucial roles in educational choices.

The Kremlin’s efforts are not merely academic; they are a calculated move to build alliances amid its isolation following the Ukraine invasion. By promoting Russian language courses and establishing cultural centers, Russia aims to enhance its soft power in Africa. However, this initiative has raised concerns about potential coercion, with reports of foreign students being pressured into military service in exchange for visa extensions.

Despite these issues, the financial appeal of studying in Russia remains strong. Tuition fees are significantly lower than in Western countries, making it an attractive option for many African students. This affordability, combined with the challenges of obtaining visas in the West, is driving a shift in educational preferences towards Russia.

As Russia expands its educational outreach, the implications for both African nations and Moscow’s geopolitical ambitions are profound. The growing number of students could reshape future diplomatic relationships, but the risks associated with coercive practices could undermine these efforts and tarnish Russia’s image as a benevolent partner.
