Firmus Energy has announced significant price increases for its customers, with an 8.98% rise for those in the Ten Towns area and a 12.5% hike for Greater Belfast. This translates to an additional £7 per month for Ten Towns residents and £12 for those in Belfast, effective from early October. The company cites escalating global gas prices, largely driven by ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, as the primary reason for these increases.
This price surge comes on the heels of a similar announcement from SSE Airtricity, which is raising its prices by nearly 19% for its 200,000 customers. The cumulative effect of these hikes is likely to strain household budgets further, especially for those already grappling with the rising cost of living. With energy bills already a significant concern, this increase could push many families to seek alternative payment arrangements or support.
Sharleen Winning, head of regulation at Firmus Energy, expressed regret over the necessity of the increase, stating that they had delayed adjustments in hopes of a market resolution. However, the current geopolitical climate has left them with no choice but to adjust tariffs. This situation highlights the vulnerability of energy prices to international events, which can have immediate local impacts.
As energy costs continue to rise, customers are encouraged to reach out to their suppliers for assistance. The Utility Regulator has advised that suppliers are willing to discuss payment options, underscoring the importance of proactive communication in managing these financial pressures.
