Warning Issued to Horse Owners Amid Deadly Disease Outbreak

Veterinarians in south-west Scotland are sounding the alarm over an outbreak of equine grass sickness, a severe neurological disease that has already claimed the lives of multiple horses and ponies. This outbreak is believed to be linked to this year’s unusual weather patterns, which have created conditions conducive to the disease’s development.

Equine grass sickness causes paralysis of the digestive system and is fatal once symptoms appear, with no available vaccine or effective treatment. The Machars Veterinary Services has advised horse owners to consider reducing grazing times to mitigate risks. Although not contagious, the disease can affect multiple horses on the same premises, raising concerns for local equine communities.

The Equine Grass Sickness Fund has reported a surge in cases across the UK, highlighting that all horses, from racehorses to family pets, are at risk. The disease is primarily seen in horses with access to grass, and ongoing research is investigating potential links to soil-borne bacteria.

Historically, equine grass sickness has had devastating impacts, particularly in the 1920s when it led to significant horse fatalities, prompting a shift towards mechanisation in agriculture. Today, it is estimated that around one in 200 horses die from this disease annually, underscoring the importance of vigilance among horse owners.
