A new police initiative aims to tackle the issue of illegal number plates across England, targeting organised crime and drivers who evade fines. The National Roads Policing Coordination Centre (NRPCC) will enhance collaboration among police forces, utilising advanced technology such as specialist goggles that can identify unreadable plates.
Illegal number plates, including cloned and ghost plates, are often used by criminals to transport stolen goods and avoid penalties. The government highlights that these practices hinder police efforts to track down stolen vehicles and apprehend offenders.
Policing and Crime Minister Sarah Jones emphasised that illegal number plates are not a victimless crime, as they facilitate criminal activities. The initiative aims to disrupt these operations by improving intelligence sharing and enforcement across forces.
Ch Supt Marc Clothier noted the effectiveness of targeted operations in both tackling offenders and educating the public on compliance. This coordinated effort could lead to a significant reduction in the use of illegal plates, enhancing road safety and law enforcement capabilities.
