Syrians Demand More Than a Death Sentence for Assad

The recent death sentence handed to Bashar Assad by a Syrian court has sparked mixed reactions among survivors of his regime’s brutality. While many view the ruling as a step towards justice, the reality of Assad’s continued life in exile raises questions about the effectiveness of such verdicts. Survivors like Huda Khayti, who lost family and home to the regime’s violence, express that mere convictions are insufficient without tangible consequences for perpetrators.

The court’s decision is seen as symbolic, with many fearing that without international cooperation, actual accountability will remain elusive. Despite an extradition treaty between Russia and Syria, the likelihood of Assad facing justice is slim, as he enjoys protection in Russia. This situation highlights the complexities of transitional justice, which extends beyond criminal trials to include reparations and institutional reforms.

Activists emphasize the need for a victim-centered approach in the justice process, advocating for the inclusion of survivors in discussions about reparations and recognition. The sheer scale of atrocities, including over 234,000 civilian deaths and numerous cases of torture, underscores the urgency for comprehensive transitional justice that addresses the needs of all affected.

As the Syrian people grapple with their painful past, the focus must shift from solely punishing Assad to ensuring that the voices of victims are heard and their experiences acknowledged. This broader approach is essential for healing and rebuilding a war-torn society, as survivors demand justice not just for themselves, but for future generations.
