A unique research project is using the hair of a 120-year-old taxidermy bear named Boris to combat wildlife crime. Conducted by Hayden Leigh, a forensic science graduate, this study aims to develop better methods for identifying animal hairs in investigations, particularly to protect modern brown bears from poaching.
Leigh’s research involves analysing the microscopic characteristics of Boris’s fur, which could lead to a cost-effective alternative to DNA analysis. This approach is significant as it utilises preserved specimens, making it more ethical and accessible than sourcing hair from live animals, which can be challenging and invasive.
The project highlights the often-overlooked value of historic taxidermy collections in museums. Councillor Jennie Lardge from Chelmsford City Council noted that while taxidermy can be controversial, Boris’s legacy is now contributing to the protection of other wildlife, showcasing the scientific potential of such collections.
As wildlife crime continues to threaten species globally, this innovative research could pave the way for more effective forensic techniques, ultimately aiding conservation efforts and enhancing our understanding of animal populations.
