Home Secretary Faces Criticism Over Immigration Policy Delays

Shabana Mahmood, the Home Secretary, is under scrutiny as her proposed reforms to tighten immigration laws appear stalled. Since announcing plans to lengthen the qualifying period for indefinite leave to remain (ILR) from five to ten years last November, no substantial changes have been implemented. This has led to accusations of inaction, with over 1,100 migrants being granted permanent settlement in the UK daily.

The delay in reform is significant, as the number of ILR approvals surged to 73,775 in just three months, a 38% increase from the previous quarter. Critics argue that Mahmood’s inability to follow through on her commitments reflects a lack of resolve in managing immigration effectively, especially with record net migration figures.

Moreover, the proposed reforms aimed to impact around two million migrants who entered the UK since 2021, but backlash from within her party has complicated the situation. Labour MPs have voiced concerns that changing the rules retroactively would be unjust, leading to further hesitation in moving forward with the policy.

As public pressure mounts and migration numbers rise, the Home Office’s projected figures suggest that settlement applications could reach unprecedented levels by 2028. This situation raises questions about the future of the UK’s immigration system and the government’s ability to manage it effectively amidst internal party conflicts.
