Surge in Domestic Abuse Charges Raises Alarm in Scotland

Scotland’s Lord Advocate, Ruth Charteris KC, has expressed deep concern over a 14% rise in domestic abuse charges, with 34,586 reported last year. This increase highlights a troubling trend in violence against women, prompting urgent calls for reform in how the justice system handles such cases.

The alarming statistics come in the wake of high-profile domestic abuse cases, including the tragic murder of Stacy Hunter by her husband, who was out on bail for previous abuse allegations. This incident has intensified discussions around monitoring high-risk offenders with GPS technology to prevent further tragedies.

Charteris emphasised the need for a cultural shift in Scotland, urging communities to challenge harmful attitudes towards domestic abuse. She reassured victims that the justice system would respond robustly to hold perpetrators accountable, ensuring their experiences are taken seriously throughout legal proceedings.

As campaigners push for legislative changes, including a new misogyny bill, the rising charges serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing crisis of violence against women in Scotland. The call to action is clear: society must unite to combat domestic abuse and support victims in their pursuit of safety and justice.
