New Research Sheds Light on Vulnerable Shark Species in UK Waters

A new research initiative led by the University of Exeter is set to enhance our understanding of three vulnerable shark species in British waters: the porbeagle, tope, and blue sharks. With nearly £1 million in funding from Natural England, this three-year project aims to gather crucial data on their behaviour and population dynamics, leveraging insights from approximately three million recreational anglers across the country.

The study will employ advanced tagging techniques to monitor the sharks’ movements and survival rates post-catch-and-release. This shift in recreational fishing practices, where anglers now measure live sharks instead of keeping them, is a significant change that could positively impact shark conservation efforts. The tagging devices will provide valuable information on how these species navigate their environments and interact with fishing activities.

Direct commercial fishing and accidental bycatch remain the primary threats to these sharks. By identifying areas where these species are most vulnerable, researchers hope to inform conservation strategies that could mitigate these risks. The collaboration between scientists and passionate anglers highlights a growing commitment to marine conservation in the UK.

Ultimately, this research not only aims to protect these fascinating creatures but also seeks to change public perceptions about sharks, emphasizing their importance in the marine ecosystem. As the study progresses, it could lead to more informed policies and practices that benefit both sharks and the fishing community.
