Clarification on Halal Chicken in Northern Ireland Schools

The Education Authority (EA) in Northern Ireland has clarified the use of halal chicken in school canteens following misinformation circulating on social media. This clarification comes as the new school term begins and aims to address concerns raised about the sourcing of chicken for school meals.

The EA explained that the decision to include halal chicken is primarily due to supply constraints. They stated that sourcing sufficient non-halal chicken to meet demand is not feasible, leading to the inclusion of halal options. However, they emphasized that halal chicken is not served in all schools and is not a blanket policy.

Concerns have been voiced by local politicians regarding halal meat, particularly around animal welfare and religious implications. The EA reassured that all chicken, whether halal or non-halal, adheres to the same welfare standards during slaughter. This clarification is crucial as it highlights the balance between meeting dietary needs and maintaining quality in school meals.

Additionally, the recent rise in school meal prices by nearly 20% has raised further concerns among families, especially those in poverty. The EA confirmed that the cost of halal chicken does not contribute to this increase, but the overall financial strain on families remains a pressing issue as schools navigate these dietary choices.
