EU Court Ruling on Russian Asset Aid Impacts Hungary’s Foreign Policy Shift

The European Union’s General Court has dismissed Hungary’s challenge against the allocation of frozen Russian assets to aid Ukraine. This ruling underscores a significant shift in Hungary’s foreign policy following recent elections, where the new government has taken a firmer stance against Russia.

The court found that it lacked jurisdiction over matters related to the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy, indicating that decisions regarding military aid to Ukraine are largely insulated from legal challenges. This decision allows the EU to proceed with mobilising substantial financial support, which has now reached €11.1 billion under the European Peace Facility.

Hungary’s previous administration under Viktor Orbán had sought to block this aid, citing the violation of its voting rights within the EU. However, the current government has expelled Russian diplomats, signalling a departure from past policies and a realignment with EU member states in their approach to Russia.

This ruling and Hungary’s policy shift could have broader implications for EU unity in response to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, affecting future funding and support mechanisms as member states grapple with security challenges posed by Russia.
