New Regulations Needed for AI in UK Healthcare

The UK’s Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has called for new laws to govern the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare. As AI technology becomes increasingly integrated into the NHS, the MHRA has outlined 44 recommendations aimed at ensuring patient safety and maintaining trust in AI-assisted care.

One significant recommendation is the establishment of a continuous monitoring system for AI products, allowing for the removal of those that malfunction or become ineffective. This is crucial as AI systems evolve over time, learning from new data, which can lead to unexpected changes in their performance.

Additionally, patients will have the right to know when AI is involved in their care, fostering transparency. The report highlights the importance of addressing biases in AI training data, which could lead to incorrect medical advice, potentially impacting patient outcomes.

As AI tools like note-taking scribes gain traction among GPs, the MHRA’s recommendations aim to balance innovation with safety. The future of AI in healthcare holds promise, but regulatory frameworks must adapt to ensure that advancements do not compromise patient care.
