India’s Role in Shaping BRICS’ Future

As India prepares to host the 18th BRICS summit, its approach aims to steer the group away from an anti-Western stance. The slogan for this year’s summit, “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability,” reflects a desire for unity among the expanded bloc, which now includes new members like Egypt and Indonesia. This careful branding seeks to maintain a neutral position, balancing relationships with both Western powers and traditional allies like Russia and China.

The summit’s significance extends beyond mere discussions; it serves as a platform for bilateral meetings, including anticipated talks between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin. However, experts suggest that substantive outcomes may be limited, as India’s focus remains on enhancing trade ties rather than engaging in confrontational politics. This reflects a broader trend of India aligning more closely with the West while maintaining its non-aligned status.

India’s growing geopolitical influence positions it as a crucial bridge-builder within BRICS, which comprises nearly half of the world’s population and a significant portion of global GDP. The internal dynamics of the bloc, however, present challenges, as differing political systems and bilateral tensions complicate consensus-building. Despite these hurdles, discussions are expected to centre on practical cooperation in trade, agriculture, and alternative financial systems.

Ultimately, India’s leadership at the summit highlights its strategic intent to foster collaboration while avoiding geopolitical tensions. This balancing act could redefine BRICS’ role on the global stage, steering it towards a more cooperative and less divisive future, even as it grapples with its internal contradictions.
