A man has been arrested in Portsmouth following an anti-migrant protest that escalated into violent disorder. The protest occurred at Eastney Marina, where demonstrators attempted to block coaches transporting 120 migrants who had recently crossed the Channel. The situation turned chaotic, prompting police intervention as demonstrators blocked roads and damaged vehicles.

The arrested individual, a 42-year-old from Paulsgrove, faces charges of violent disorder and assaulting a police officer. This arrest marks the first of what police anticipate will be multiple arrests as they investigate the incident. Assistant Chief Constable Tony Rowlinson emphasized that the police will not tolerate violence or criminal damage during protests, asserting that such actions undermine public safety.

The protest followed a similar demonstration at the Port of Dover, highlighting a growing trend of anti-migrant sentiment in the UK. Police are now on high alert for future protests, warning that any unlawful behaviour will lead to prosecution. The incident raises concerns about the safety of both migrants and law enforcement, as tensions around immigration continue to rise.

As the investigation unfolds, the police are also addressing online threats against agencies involved in migrant support, indicating a broader societal issue surrounding the treatment of migrants and the public’s response to immigration policies.
