Community Outcry as Iconic Ugly House Faces Auction

The impending auction of the Grade II-listed Ugly House, known locally as Tŷ Hyll, has left the community in Gwynedd heartbroken. This historic cottage, which has served as a tearoom since 2012, is not just a building but a symbol of local heritage and a beloved landmark for both residents and tourists. With a guide price of £199,000, the Snowdonia Society, which owns the property, aims to reinvest the proceeds into the surrounding landscape and wildlife.

However, concerns have been raised about the future of the building. The current manager of the tearoom, Jane Davies, fears that it may be transformed into a private residence, cutting off public access. A petition urging for a pause in the auction, to explore community-focused alternatives, has garnered over 850 signatures. Supporters argue that Tŷ Hyll represents the folklore and identity of Snowdonia, and its closure would be a significant loss.

The Snowdonia Society has stated that the decision to sell was difficult but believes that other entities could better manage the property and its grounds. They have expressed a commitment to ensuring that any new owners continue to welcome visitors, although there is no guarantee that this will happen. As the auction date approaches, the community’s hopes for preserving this cherished landmark remain uncertain.

The auction is scheduled for September 23, and the outcome may set a precedent for how historic properties are managed in the area. The fate of Tŷ Hyll could influence future discussions about heritage preservation and community involvement in the stewardship of local landmarks.
