A nine-year-old boy from Bolton, Qasim Rizwan, has experienced a remarkable recovery after receiving a rare blood transfusion, which he describes as a restart of his life. Diagnosed with autoimmune haemolytic anaemia (AIHA), Qasim faced a daunting challenge as his blood type was exceptionally rare, complicating treatment options.
Doctors at Manchester Children’s Hospital struggled to find a suitable match, as Qasim’s unique blood type, a subtype of the Rhesus system, is shared by only one in 10,000 people. Fortunately, a rare donor was called upon, and all matching units of blood were urgently prepared for Qasim’s transfusion.
The effects of AIHA can be severe, leading to symptoms such as extreme fatigue and jaundice. Qasim’s mother, Mahnaz Nazar, highlighted the importance of blood donors, stating that without their help, her son might not have survived. Her experience has inspired her to become a blood donor herself.
This case underscores the critical need for blood donations, particularly for patients with rare blood types. As Qasim continues to thrive, he expresses gratitude to those who contributed to his recovery, reminding us all of the vital role donors play in saving lives.
