London’s Ebike Seizures Highlight Parking Crisis and Regulatory Gaps

London councils have seized over 3,000 ebikes this year due to improper parking, a 23% increase from 2025. This surge reflects growing frustration among residents and local authorities as poorly parked bikes block pavements and create hazards for pedestrians, particularly those with disabilities.

The rise in seized ebikes has prompted calls for better regulation and more designated parking spaces. Operators like Lime and Forest argue that the lack of parking infrastructure is a significant issue, but councils are pushing for a unified regulatory framework to manage the situation effectively.

The recent English devolution bill empowers local authorities to license ebike operators and enforce parking standards. This could lead to a more coordinated approach across London, addressing the current ‘jigsaw puzzle’ of regulations that complicates enforcement.

As the demand for dockless ebikes continues to grow, the need for a sustainable solution becomes critical. Without effective measures, the ongoing issues could deter users and undermine the potential benefits of ebikes as a greener transport alternative.
