A lorry depot in Bedfordshire has ramped up its security measures due to an unprecedented rise in illegal migrants attempting to access its site. Over the past year, the depot has recorded three incidents of migrants climbing out of lorries, a notable increase for a location situated over 100 miles from Dover.
The lead security guard, Kenny, explained that the depot has had to enhance its checks to ensure the integrity of the vehicles and the safety of staff. He noted that while security checks have always been part of operations, the frequency and thoroughness have significantly increased due to the recent migrant activity.
Drivers have expressed growing concerns about the risks posed by migrants entering their vehicles. One driver shared his experience of being detained by border forces after migrants managed to climb into his truck while he took a break in France. This has led some drivers to alter their routines to avoid potential encounters with migrants.
Despite the heightened security and concerns from drivers, the Home Office reports a decrease in asylum claims from lorry arrivals, indicating a complex and evolving situation in the ongoing migrant crisis.
