Failure to Deport Leads to Further Assault by Migrant

Radiet Meles, a 35-year-old Eritrean migrant, has been convicted of raping a woman in Newport after authorities failed to deport him following a previous sexual offence. Meles, who entered the UK illegally in 2015, had already served a five-year sentence for attempted rape but was allowed to remain in the country upon his release.

Despite being a registered sex offender, Meles was not monitored and returned to Newport, where he found employment. His earlier conviction involved assaulting an unconscious woman at a party, highlighting a troubling pattern of behaviour that authorities overlooked.

The case raises serious questions about the effectiveness of the UK’s immigration and monitoring systems, particularly regarding individuals with a history of sexual offences. The lack of deportation and oversight allowed Meles to reoffend, putting the community at risk.

As Meles awaits sentencing for his latest crime, this incident underscores the urgent need for reforms in how the UK handles deportations and the monitoring of dangerous individuals, especially those with prior convictions. The implications for public safety and immigration policy are significant, prompting calls for immediate action to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
