Emergency Evacuation on EasyJet Flight After Power Bank Fire

Passengers on an EasyJet flight were forced to evacuate after a lithium power bank ignited in an overhead locker. The Airbus A320, preparing for takeoff from Milan Malpensa to Prague, was halted when crew noticed smoke, prompting an immediate emergency evacuation down inflatable chutes. Fortunately, all 146 passengers escaped safely, although two sustained minor injuries during the evacuation.

The incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding the safety of lithium batteries on flights. The Italian air accident investigation agency, ANSV, determined that the fire was caused by an overheating power bank, which spontaneously combusted. This event is part of a troubling trend, as the UK Civil Aviation Authority has previously warned about the risks posed by improperly packed electronic devices, including power banks and vapes.

EasyJet’s guidelines prohibit the use of power banks on board, advising that they should only be carried in hand luggage and monitored closely. This incident serves as a stark reminder for travellers to adhere strictly to airline regulations regarding electronic devices, as failure to do so can lead to dangerous situations.

As air travel resumes post-pandemic, incidents like this could impact passenger confidence and operational schedules. Airlines may need to enhance safety protocols and passenger education to prevent similar occurrences in the future, ensuring that safety remains a top priority in the aviation industry.
