Remembering Lives Lost on the Roads: A Personal Journey

Eamonn Karran, who tragically lost his 18-year-old son Noah in a road traffic collision, recently attended a poignant event aimed at remembering victims of road accidents. Organised by Road Victim Support Northern Ireland-Donegal, the ‘Say Their Name’ event encourages families to share stories and celebrate the lives of their loved ones, ensuring they are remembered as individuals rather than mere statistics.

Karran highlighted the emotional weight of such gatherings, noting that they provide a vital space for bereaved families to connect and share their grief. He emphasised that behind every statistic lies a person who was deeply loved, and that acknowledging their humanity is crucial in understanding the broader impact of road fatalities.

As of now, 47 people have lost their lives in road traffic collisions in Northern Ireland this year alone. Karran expressed the importance of these statistics, but also the necessity of recognising the personal stories behind them. He shared his own journey of grief, revealing how he initially struggled to seek help but later found solace in connecting with others who have experienced similar losses.

Through these events, Karran not only honours his son’s memory but also advocates for greater awareness around the emotional toll of road traffic accidents. He encourages others to speak out and seek support, highlighting that sharing experiences can be therapeutic and help in the healing process.
