British scientists are rallying to protect the glutinous snail, a species now confined to just one lake in the UK. This tiny mollusc, known scientifically as Myxas glutinosa, is considered as precious as an Egyptian artefact due to its rarity and ecological significance. Once widespread in British waterways, its decline is attributed to water pollution and habitat destruction, making its survival a crucial indicator of freshwater health.
Ian Hughes, a dedicated conservationist, has been working since 2014 to study and breed these snails, creating a captive colony in his greenhouse. His efforts have led to breakthroughs in understanding their reproductive habits, with the first recorded eggs appearing in captivity. This initiative is part of a broader £60 million government-backed programme aimed at safeguarding rare species across the UK.
Collaborating with wildlife parks and zoos, Hughes is now distributing captive-bred snails to various facilities for further research and potential reintroduction into the wild. The Freshwater Habitats Trust is also involved, seeking suitable locations for the snails’ return, which could take place within the next three years if successful.
However, climate change poses an ongoing threat to their survival. Experts warn that while zoo involvement enhances their chances, the future of the glutinous snail remains uncertain. Hughes emphasizes the importance of preserving this unique species, viewing it as a responsibility to future generations.
